The sensor is located on the gearbox opposite the drive gear teeth. The sensor sends information about the speed of the output shaft to the transmission ECU. Based on this information, the transmission ECU decides to shift gears, detects slippage in the clutches and brakes when shifting gears, and thus adjusts the gear shift timing and corrects the auto-tuning parameters.
The sensor uses the same operating principles as the input shaft speed sensor.
