2. If you find that when you press the brake pedal, mainly the front wheels brake, and that it is impossible to block the rear wheels without applying the handbrake, or vice versa, when braking hard, the rear wheels invariably block, then this indicates a malfunction of the compensator.
3. Early models were equipped with an adjustable, load-sensing compensator, but recent models already have a non-adjustable compensator (see photo). Checking the compensator must be carried out in the workshop "Peugeot", with the necessary equipment. Do not try to disassemble the compensator yourself.
4. To replace the compensator, it is enough to remove the old compensator and install a new one, and then bleed the brake system. Adjustable expansion joints on early models should be adjusted as follows after installation.
5. Check that the rear tire pressure is correct.
6. Load the rear of the machine so that the distance between the center of the rear axle and the upper edge of the wheel arch is 305-315 mm.
7. See b/fig. 8.35. In workshops "Peugeot" to adjust the compensator, use the special tool 8.0803 shown in the picture, but you can replace it with a 9 mm thick metal bar that has a slot that the spring link goes into when the bar is installed as shown in the picture. Install the block in place and loosen the locknut ("1" on B / fig. 8.35). With screw "2" achieve that the total distance "X" was equal to 223.5 mm. Never change or adjust the position of the thrust block "3". While holding the adjusting screw, tighten the locknut. If for some reason you change the position of the thrust block "3" you have to go to the workshop "Peugeot" for adjusting the compensator, because in this case, it will be necessary to measure the pressure in the front and rear brake circuits.
8. After the appearance of non-adjustable compensators, adjustable ones were no longer installed. If your car has an early (regulated) type, and you suspect that it is defective, you should contact the workshop "Peugeot". If the compensator needs to be replaced, a non-adjustable compensator can be installed instead, provided that there is a special support bracket on the cross for it. When installing a new compensator, the brake pipe will need to be replaced.
Adjusting the brake compensator on Estate models
1. The brake compensator fitted to the Estate model is an adjustable, load sensing compensator (see above).

2. Raise and support the rear of the machine. Check that the stops of the suspension arms are in place and in good condition. If not, replace the stops.
3. Insert a 5 mm thick slotted metal bar between the spring adjusting screw and the suspension control arm.
4. Using the control arm adjusting screw or spring adjusting screw, ensure that the inserted block just slides between the spring adjusting screw and the control arm.
5. Pull out the metal bar and lower the machine to the ground.

6. To adjust the brake compensator on these models, special equipment is required, so this work must be done in a workshop "Peugeot".
