1. After disconnecting any part of the system or after the engine has been turned off due to lack of fuel, the system must be bled before starting the engine (pump fuel into it and remove air).
2. Loosen the bleed screw on the fuel filter head 2-3 turns. On a Lucas CAV/Roto-Diesel filter, you can install a small plastic tube on the bleeder screw and dip the free end into a small container to collect the spilled fuel.
3. Move the manual priming pump plunger until fuel, free of air bubbles, begins to flow out from under the screw. On some Lucas CAV/Roto-Diesel filter models, the plunger must first be removed (see photo), which can sometimes cause it to disengage from the inner piston. If this happens, unscrew the filter housing and press the piston onto the plunger. Replace the body and slowly work the plunger.
4. Tighten the bleed screw.
5. Turn the ignition on to energize the shut-off solenoid and pump the manual priming pump until resistance is felt.
6. Where applicable (on some Lucas CAV/Roto-Diesel filters) re-tighten the plunger.
7. Set the ignition key to position "M" and wait for the preheat signal lamp to go out.
8. Fully depress the gas pedal and start the engine. It may take a little longer than usual to work as a starter to finally bleed the system.
