The Peugeot 305 fuel system is traditional in terms of layout and principle of operation. The fuel tank is located at the rear of the car under the luggage compartment (-between rear wheels). Fuel is taken from the tank using a mechanical pump, standing on the casing of the gas distribution mechanism (under the distributor). The pump is driven by a pushrod driven by an eccentric cam on the oil pump/distributor shaft. The fuel pump includes a strainer.
Depending on the model, there may be two types of carburetor, which are largely similar to each other. The carburetor is single chamber, downdraft and has a mechanical accelerator pump and manual choke. The carburetor body is heated by hot coolant, which is taken from the engine cooling system. The strainer is on the carburetor inlet.
Air enters the carburetor through a paper air filter. On SR models, in cold weather, warm air is supplied to the carburetor by an automatic intake air temperature control. On GL and GR models, the intake air temperature is controlled manually.
