The Peugeot 305 has direct front wheel drive from the main gear/differential in the front of the gearbox to the front wheel hubs via two drive shafts. At the ends of the shafts there are hinges of equal angular velocities (CV joints), whose task is to take on the angular movements of the suspension and steering parts. The inner ends of the shafts have a sliding splined connection with the main gear, which provides a change in the effective length of the drive shafts depending on the movement of the suspension and steering parts.
Do-it-yourself maintenance of drive shafts is limited to a narrow range of operations. Even the replacement of CV joint anthers should be done by a specialist.
The drive shafts are splined to the front wheel hubs. The hubs rotate on double row ball bearings located in the hub holders at the bottom of the front suspension struts.
The rear wheel hubs rotate on conventional tapered roller bearings mounted on trunnions in the trailing arms.
