4. At regular intervals or at the first sign of poor operation of the box, check the transmission fluid level with a dipstick. The box must be hot (after at least half an hour). With the engine running, place the gear selector in position "R" and check the transmission fluid level in the box. If necessary, add fluid through the dipstick tube using a clean funnel and a clean flexible tube (see b/fig. 12.69). When working with an automatic transmission, absolute cleanliness is of great importance.


5. If it is often necessary to top up the transmission fluid, inspect the box for leaks.

6. Also, at a specified interval, drain the fluid from the box and the final drive housing.

Caution: Transmission fluid can be very hot.

After draining the fluid, reinstall the drain plugs and pour the required amount of fresh transmission fluid into the box.

Precautionary measures

7. If it is necessary to tow a machine with an automatic transmission, the towing speed must not exceed 30 mph and the distance the machine is towed must not exceed 30 miles. If these conditions cannot be met, the machine should be towed using the semi-load method.
