The gearbox is housed in an aluminum alloy crankcase and attached to the left end of the engine. It consists of the actual gearbox, final drive and differential. The gears of the secondary shaft are switched on using a rod, forks and synchronizers.
The gearbox converts the torque transmitted from the engine in magnitude and direction. In addition, the gearbox serves to permanently decouple the engine and transmission (e.g. when the car is stopped).
The torque from the engine through the clutch is transmitted to the input shaft of the gearbox. From the secondary shaft of the gearbox, the torque is transmitted to the drive shafts through the differential. The gear is engaged by moving the synchronizer sliding clutch, as a result of which the gear is rigidly connected to the gearbox shaft.
The differential serves to distribute torque between the wheels and allows the driven shafts to rotate at different angular speeds. With different coefficients of adhesion of the left and right wheels with the road surface, the ratio of torques on the left and right wheels is maintained. In this case, the wheel with a lower coefficient of adhesion begins to slip.
The gearbox is a complex unit and therefore it is recommended to repair it at car service enterprises. When removing and installing many parts, it is necessary to measure the clearances and, if necessary, adjust them using the appropriate shims and washers. If the gearbox is defective or runs with a lot of noise, it is advisable to entrust its repair to a specialist or replace the gearbox, which can be much cheaper. However, some of the gearbox malfunctions can be eliminated without removing it from the car.
Despite all the difficulties, an experienced specialist can repair the gearbox even in a garage, having a special tool and doing the job sequentially, step by step, noting the operations performed. When repairing the gearbox, it is necessary to use special circlip pliers, bearing pullers, an inertial hammer, a set of punches, a micrometer and a hydraulic press.
Before removing the gearbox, try to determine the gearbox malfunction as accurately as possible, which will greatly facilitate repairs in the future.
