Examination
1. To check the correct adjustment of the hand brake, tighten the hand brake lever to the stop and count the number of clicks, which should be 6-8.
2. If the number of clicks differs from the specified, it is necessary to adjust as follows.
3. Start the engine and fully release the handbrake.
4. Press the brake pedal several times, then stop the engine.
5. Raise the rear of the car and secure it on stands.
6. Apply the handbrake 6-8 clicks, and check that both rear wheels are braked.
7. If the wheels are not braked, adjust the mechanism.
Adjustment
Models with rear drum brakes
1. To access the handbrake adjuster, unscrew the nuts and bolts and remove the heat shield.
2. Loosen the lock nut on the hand brake adjuster mechanism and turn the adjuster nut until the brake shoes begin to brake the brake drum.
3. Apply the handbrake 6-8 clicks, and check that both rear wheels are braked.
4. If the wheels are not locked, readjust by turning the adjuster nut.
5. After completing the adjustment, tighten the adjuster locknut, install the heat shield and lower the vehicle.
6. Check that the handbrake indicator light comes on after tightening the handbrake handle one click.
Models with rear disc brakes
7. To access the handbrake adjuster, unscrew the nuts and bolts and remove the heat shield, then lower the rear of the vehicle to the ground.
8. Block the front wheels and check that the handbrake is released.
9. Loosen the locknut on the handbrake adjuster mechanism and turn the adjuster nut until there is a gap of 2.0mm between the end of the handbrake cable (A) and handbrake lever on the rear calipers (IN).
10. By manually moving the levers on the calipers, check that the levers return fully to their original position when the hand brake is released.
11. Move the adjuster nut so that the distance between the back of the adjuster nut and the threaded end of the adjuster bushing is 15.0 mm.
12. Apply the handbrake 6-8 clicks and check that both rear wheels are braked.
13. If the wheels are not locked, readjust by turning the adjuster nut.
14. After completing the adjustment, tighten the adjuster locknut, install the heat shield and lower the vehicle.
15. Check that the handbrake indicator light comes on after tightening the handbrake handle one click.
