Removing
1. Remove ground wire from battery.
2. If equipped, remove the airbag.
3. Remove steering wheel.
4. Remove steering column covers.
5. Remove the ignition switch.
6. On models since 1992, release the mounting brackets, and lower the fuse box down from the panel.
7. In the front lower part of the vehicle interior, unscrew the floor carpet to access the steering column mounting bolt.
8. Under the steering column, disconnect the three connectors (indicated by arrows for models from 1993) from the ignition switch. In the same way, if equipped, disconnect the wire connector from the airbag.
9. In the front lower part of the vehicle interior, apply alignment marks on the intermediate shaft and steering column shaft.
10. Unscrew the clamping bolt securing the steering column shaft to the intermediate shaft.
11. Remove the two lower steering column mounting bolts (indicated by arrows for models from 1993).
12. Loosen the top steering column nuts (indicated by arrows for models up to 1992), then remove the steering column from the vehicle.
Examination
Check the condition of the steering column for damage and wear. Check the steering shaft play in the steering column bushings and the condition of the universal joints.
Installation
1. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
2. On airbag models, reinstall the steering column, then check that the clearance between the rear of the steering wheel and the column covers is 8.0 mm. If the gap differs from the required, perform the following steps:
- loosen the pinch bolt securing the steering column shaft to the intermediate shaft, and move the steering shaft as necessary in order to obtain the required clearance between the steering wheel and casings;
- compress the pinch bolt and install the trim.
