The Peugeot 406 Saloon was introduced in early 1996. At first, models with the following engines were offered: 1.6- (1580 cm3), 1.8- (1761 cm3) and 2.0's (1998 cm3) liter petrol engines and 1.9-liter (1905 cm3) turbodiesel engine.
The XU series gasoline engines have an overhead camshaft and four cylinders; the engine is a 1.6-liter SOHC type with 8 valves, and the engines are 1.8- and 2.0-liter DOHC types with 16 valves. Diesel engine from the XUD series type SOHC with 8 valves.
The engine is mounted transversely at the front of the vehicle, with the gearbox mounted on the left side of the engine. All vehicles are equipped with a manual transmission (automatic transmission was introduced later on some engines).
All models have fully independent front and rear suspension, including shock absorbers and coil springs, as well as a completely unique rear wheel turning system.
A wide range of standard and optional equipment is available to suit most tastes, including central locking, power windows and an electric sunroof. The air conditioning system was supplied only on request.
Summer 1996 2.1 liter was introduced (2088 cm3) turbodiesel engine with 12 valves.
Peugeot introduced the ESTATE in early 1997 (station wagon), as well as a V6 petrol engine (not shown in this guide). However, these cars differ in small changes.
Subject to the regular maintenance recommended by the manufacturer, the car will be reliable and economical. The engine bay is well designed and most areas requiring frequent maintenance are easily accessible.
