Description of engines
XUD engines are turbocharged, four-cylinder, transversely mounted overhead cam engines with a gearbox on the left side of the engine.
The aluminum alloy cylinder head has 8 valves on 1.9 liter engines and 12 valves on 2.1 liter engines. On 1.9 liter engines, valve clearances are adjusted by adjusting shims located between the tappets and the ends of the valve stems, on 2.1 liter engines, valve clearances are automatically adjusted by hydraulic tappets.
The camshaft is mounted on three bearings directly in the cylinder head on 1.9 liter engines and on five bearings on separate fasteners on 2.1 liter engines. The timing belt drives the camshaft, high pressure fuel pump and coolant pump.
The crankshaft is supported by five main bearings. The axial play of the crankshaft is regulated by thrust half rings located on both sides of the bearing No. 2.
Pistons are selected by weight and have floating piston pins secured by circlips.
The oil pump is driven by a chain from a sprocket located on the front of the crankshaft. An oil cooler is available on all engines.
Attention! Engines of 1.9 and 2.1 liters are complex units with numerous systems and auxiliary units. The engine compartment of the engine is used to the maximum and access to the engine and auxiliary units is extremely limited. In many cases, accessories will have to be removed or relocated, and wiring, pipes and hoses will have to be disconnected and removed when the engine is being repaired.
Repair of the engine installed in the car
On a 1.9 liter engine installed in a car, you can perform the following work:
- removal and installation of the cylinder head;
- replacement of the toothed belt;
- removal and installation of the camshaft;
- removal and installation of the oil pan;
- removal and installation of the piston group;
- removal and installation of the oil pump;
- replacement of the engine mount;
- removal and installation of the flywheel.
On a 2.1 liter engine installed in a car, you can perform the following work:
- replacement of the toothed belt;
- removal and installation of the camshaft and hydraulic pushers;
- removal and installation of the oil pan;
- removal and installation of the oil pump;
- replacement of the engine mount;
- removal and installation of the flywheel.
Attention! On 2.1 liter engines, the distance between the cylinder head and the bulkhead of the engine compartment at the rear of the engine is so limited that it is impossible to remove the cylinder head from the engine installed in the car. This operation is made only on the engine removed from the car.
