2. If not removed, remove the intake and exhaust manifolds.
3. Remove the camshaft, pushers and gaskets.
4. On diesel engines, remove the glow plugs. On 2.1 liter diesel engines, remove the central part of the toothed belt tensioner by unscrewing the fastening nut and stud.
5. Remove the studs securing the toothed belt tensioner.
6. Using a valve spring compressor, compress each spring and remove the cotters from the valve end. Remove the spring compressor and remove the spring cup, spring and spring seat. Using pliers, being careful, remove the flinger ring from the valve stem.
7. Remove the spring compressor tool and remove the spring plate.
8. Remove the spring and spring seat. Using pliers, carefully remove the flinger from the valve stem.
9. When the valve spring is compressed and the spring cup is not removed from the cotters, it is necessary to lightly hit the spring cup with a hammer through a block of wood, which will release the cotters.
10. Remove the valve through the combustion chamber.
11. Store each valve in a separate plastic bag along with the spring plate, spring, spring seat and crackers for further installation in their places.
