Note. Before starting work, read the warning about the dangers and hazards of brake fluid given at the beginning paragraph 2.
1. If any line or hose needs to be replaced, minimize brake fluid leakage as described below. Unscrew the brake fluid reservoir cap and then tighten it again with a piece of polyethylene underneath to ensure a tight seal. Alternatively, if necessary, the hoses can be hermetically sealed using a suitable brake hose clamp and the metal brake line unions can be plugged (taking care not to let dirt get into the system) immediately after disconnecting the pipelines. To collect the leaking liquid, place a rag under the detachable fitting.
2. If you wish to disconnect the hose, unscrew the union nut and remove the spring clip that secures the hose to the appropriate support bracket.
3. It is preferable to use a special wrench to unscrew the nuts of the union connections (for brake lines) proper size. These keys are sold in large auto supply stores. If this is not available, a tight-fitting open end wrench will be required, although if the nuts are too tight or «seized» as a result of corrosion, if this wrench slips, you can ruin the edges of the nut by rounding them. In this case, a self-tightening wrench is required. This is often the only way to undo a stubborn connection. But it follows that during assembly you will need to replace the pipeline and damaged nuts. Be sure to clean the connection and the surrounding area before disconnecting the nipple connection. When disconnecting an element that has more than one stub connection, mark them carefully before disturbing any of the connections.
4. If the brake piping needs to be replaced, it can be purchased from a Peugeot/Citroen dealer. There you can also cut it to the required length, complete it with nuts and flare its ends. All that is required now is to bend it to the desired shape before installing it on the car. You can use as a template «old» pipeline. As an alternative, the following option is possible. Large auto supply stores can assemble brake lines from kits, but this requires a very accurate length measurement «old» pipeline to ensure the correct length of the new one. The most reliable thing is to take the original with you to the store and show it as a sample.
5. Do not over tighten the nut when installing. The application of brute force to obtain a quality connection is not required at all.
6. Separate pipes and hoses correctly and make sure they are not kinked. Fix them in the appropriate clamps or brackets. After installation, remove the polyethylene from the reservoir and bleed the system as described in paragraph 2. Wash off any spilled fluid and carefully check the system for leaks.
