Note. At installation it is necessary to use a new nut of fastening of a spherical joint of steering draft to a rotary fist.
Removing
1. Apply the parking brake. Raise the front of the vehicle and securely jack stands under it (see «Lifting and placing the car on supports»). Remove the corresponding front wheel.
2. If the tip is to be reused, take a ruler and scriber or similar tools and mark its position relative to the tie rod.
3. Hold the tie rod and loosen the tie rod end locknut a quarter of a turn (pic. 23.3). Do not move the locknut out of this position as it will serve as a base mark during installation.
Pic. 23.3. Tie rod ball joint locknut (A) and a nut for fastening the ball joint to the steering knuckle (IN)
4. Turn away a nut of fastening of the spherical joint of a tip of steering draft in a rotary fist and by means of a universal puller of spherical joints release a conic pin of a spherical joint. Throw away the nut; when installing, use a new one.
5. Disconnect the tip from the tie rod while counting the exact number of turns required to unscrew.
6. Count the number of open threads between the end of the ferrule and the locknut and record this value. If a new ball joint is to be installed, loosen the locknut by «old» ball joint.
7. Thoroughly clean the tip and threads. Replace tip if ball joint movement is uneven or too tight, worn or damaged. Carefully check the pin taper and threads. If the ball joint boot is damaged, the entire tip must be replaced as the boot is not supplied separately.
Installation
8. If a new tip is to be installed, screw the locknut onto it and position it so that the same number of open threads are visible as noted before removal.
9. Screw a tip in steering draft, having turned it on the same number of turns which was marked at removal. This should bring the tip locknut into position within a quarter of a turn from the end of the tie rod, aligning the marks that were made on removal (if applicable). Hold the tie rod and tighten the locknut securely.
10. Insert the ball joint pin into the steering knuckle, and then screw on a new nut and tighten it to the prescribed torque.
11. Install the wheel, lower the vehicle and tighten the wheel bolts to the specified torque.
12. Finally, check the front wheel alignment and adjust if necessary (see paragraph 24).
