Note. Do not remove the hub assembly unless absolutely necessary. A puller is required to remove the hub from the wheel axle, and removing the hub bearing will damage it. When installing, use a new hub assembly, a new hub nut and a new hub cap.
Removing
1. Remove the appropriate rear brake drum and, on models with ABS, the rear wheel speed sensor as described in Chapter 9.
2. Using a hammer and a large flathead screwdriver, carefully remove the cap from the center of the hub. Throw away the lid; when installing, use a new one. Using a hammer and a small chisel, carefully knock out the caulking of the lug of the hub nut in the groove on the wheel axle.
3. Using a socket and extension, unscrew the rear hub mounting nut and remove the thrust washer (in the presence of). Discard the hub nut; when installing, use a new nut.
4. Using a puller, remove the hub assembly with the outer bearing from the wheel axle. After removing the hub, take a bearing puller and remove the inner bearing race from the wheel axle, and then remove the hub spacer, noting for yourself how it is installed. Later models use a spacer that can be installed in any position.
5. After removing the hub, inspect the wheel axle for signs of wear or damage. If the wheel axle is worn, the entire trailing arm will need to be replaced as the axle is not supplied separately. Replacing the trailing arm requires the use of several special tools and should therefore be left to a Peugeot/Citroen dealer.
6. Obtain a new hub assembly, hub nut and hub cap for installation. Be aware that there are two different types of hub nuts available: one with a separate thrust washer and one with an integral thrust washer. These nuts are interchangeable, but the torque values for each type are different.
Installation
7. Lubricate the wheel axle with clean engine oil, and then install the spacer. In early versions, it should be positioned accordingly.
8. Place the hub assembly on the wheel axle and, using a tubular mandrel, seat it in place.
9. Install thrust washer (if applicable), and then screw on the new hub nut. Do not use a separate thrust washer if a new nut with an integral thrust washer is used. Lubricate the threads and contact surfaces of the hub nut and tighten the nut to the specified torque according to the type. Lock the nut securely by caulking its tab into the groove on the wheel axle, then hammer the new cap into place in the center of the hub (pic. 11.9, a-d).

10. Finally install the brake drum and ABS wheel sensor (if applicable), as described in chapter 9.
