Note. This information only applies to later systems installed by Peugeot/Citroen as standard equipment. On early models, a keypad was used to disable the immobilizer. At the time of this writing, there was no information available about the early style keypad.
Engine Immobilizer
1. Engine immobilizer is standard on most models. The system is automatically activated every time the key is inserted into the ignition switch.
2. The immobilizer ensures that the car can only be started with the original Peugeot/Citroen ignition key. The key contains an electronic chip (transponder), in which the code is programmed. When the key is inserted into the ignition switch, it uses the current present in the sensor ring (which is installed on the ignition switch housing), to send a signal to the immobilizer electronic control unit. On vehicles prior to model year 2001, the control unit is located under the dashboard on the driver's side. On vehicles after model year 2001, the ECU is integrated into the BSI multifunctional electronic unit (see paragraph 22). The BEU checks this code each time the ignition is turned on. If the key code does not match the BEU code, the latter disables the electrical circuits of the starter, fuel supply and ignition (whichever is applicable), to prevent the engine from starting.
3. When the vehicle is new, a confidential security card is provided along with other vehicle documentation. This card contains the security code that your Peugeot/Citroen dealer will require when doing any work on the immobilizer system. Keep this card in a safe place at home; never store it in a car. If the ignition key is lost, a new one can be obtained from your Peugeot/Citroen dealer. Present the confidential security card and all available keys to your Peugeot/Citroen dealer. which will provide a new key and reprogram all keys with the new security code. This will invalidate the lost key.
Warning. Without a confidential security card, it will be impossible to program the keys and reprogram the immobilizer system.
Advice. If you have bought a vehicle that is not new, it is recommended as a precaution to reprogram all keys and the immobilizer system with the new security code. This will ensure that the only keys capable of starting the car and invalidating all other keys are the ones in your possession.
4. For any problems with the immobilizer, please contact your Peugeot/Citroen dealer.
Anti-theft alarm system
5. Most of the models described in this manual have an anti-theft alarm system as standard equipment. On all other models, the system is offered as an option (at the request of the client). The anti-theft alarm is automatically activated when the vehicle is locked using the remote control and deactivated when the doors are unlocked using the remote control. The anti-theft alarm system includes switches located on the hood, tailgate and each of the side doors, and on some models is also complemented by an ultrasonic interior scanning system (volume control), which detects movement inside the car using sensors installed on both sides of the car.
6. Detailed information on the operation of the anti-theft alarm system, depending on the model, is given in the Owner's Manual that came with the car. They are not shown here for obvious security reasons.
7. If the anti-theft alarm system fails, have the vehicle checked by a Peugeot/Citroen dealer.
