Parking brake
- Check the operation of the parking brake. Too much lever travel (number of ratchet clicks) indicates incorrect adjustment of the brake or its cables.
- Make sure the parking brake does not release when the lever is lightly tapped from the side. Check up reliability of fastening of the lever.
Foot brake
- Depress the brake pedal and make sure the pedal is not «crawling» to the floor, which would indicate a malfunction of the brake master cylinder. Release the pedal, wait a few seconds, and then press the pedal again. If the pedal drops almost to the floor before strong resistance appears, then the brakes need to be adjusted or repaired. If the pedal «soft», it means that there is air in the hydraulic system that must be removed.
- Make sure the pedal is secure and in good condition. Also check the pedals, floor, or carpets for signs of leaks, which, if any, indicate bad seals in the brake master cylinder.
- Check the brake booster (if it is installed), for which, pressing the pedal several times, and then keeping it pressed, start the engine. As soon as the engine starts, the pedal should move down slightly. If this is not the case, there may be a defect in the vacuum hose or in the amplifier itself.
Steering wheel and steering column
- Inspect the steering wheel for cracks, loose hubs. spokes or rims.
- Move the steering wheel from side to side and then up and down. Make sure it doesn't hang on the speaker. which would indicate wear or loosening of the fastening nut. Continue to pump the wheel in the same way as before, but at the same time turn it slightly to the right and left.
- Check that the steering wheel is not loose on the steering column and that there is no unusual movement of the steering wheel that would indicate wear on the column support bearings or joints.
Windshield, rear-view mirrors and sun visor
- There must be no cracks or other noticeable damage on the windshield in the driver's field of vision. It is allowed to have small cracks that appeared as a result of blows with pebbles. Rear-view mirrors must be securely fixed, undamaged and easily adjustable.
- The sun visor on the driver's side must be securely held in the raised position.
Seat belts and seats
Note. The checks described below apply to all seat belts, both front and rear. □ Inspect the straps of all seat belts (including rear belts if fitted) for cuts, severe wear or damage. Fasten and unfasten each belt several times to check the buckles. Check the retractor, if provided. Check the security of all those seat belt anchorages that can be accessed from inside the vehicle.
- Seat belts whose pretensioners have already been activated have a special indicator on the seat belt buckle cable. In itself, this is not a reason for recognizing the car as having failed the inspection.
- The front seats themselves must also be securely fastened, and the backrests must be securely locked in an upright position.
Doors
- Both front doors must open and close from the outside and inside and, when closed, must be securely locked.
