Removing
1. Disconnect the ground wire from the battery (see «Disconnecting the battery»).
2. Drain the engine oil, then clean and install the oil drain plug, tightening it securely. If the prescribed engine service interval is approaching, when the oil and filter must be changed, it is recommended to remove the filter now as well and replace it with a new one. After assembly, you can fill the engine with fresh oil. For more information, please refer to chapter 1B.
3. Fully apply the parking brake. Raise the front of the vehicle and securely jack stands under it (see «Lifting and placing the car on supports»).
4. On A/C models where the compressor is mounted on the side of the oil pan, remove the drive belt as described in chapter 1B. Remove the compressor mounting bolts, remove it and place it away from the sump. Tie the compressor to a suitable vehicle element to prevent excessive deformation of the refrigerant lines. Do not disconnect the refrigerant lines from the compressor (refer to the warnings in chapter 3).
5. If necessary, disconnect the electrical connector of the oil level indicator sensor, which is screwed into the oil pan.
6. Gradually release and turn out all bolts of fastening of the oil pallet. Since the sump bolts vary in length, they must be unscrewed in order and stored in the correct installation sequence. To ensure safety, insert the bolts into the holes cut in a piece of cardboard and clearly marked. During installation, this will avoid the risk of misalignment of the bolts.
7. Open the joint, for which you should knock on the pallet with the palm of your hand. Then lower the pallet and remove it from under the car. If the tray is not removed (and it's quite likely), a spatula or similar tool can be used to separate the joint, which should be carefully inserted between the oil pan and the block. Run a spatula around the perimeter of the joint, releasing the oil pan. Remove gasket (in the presence of) and throw it away; when installing, use a new one. While the oil pan is removed, take the opportunity to inspect the oil pump/strainer for signs of blockage or damage. If necessary, remove the pump as described in paragraph 15, and clean or replace the strainer.
8. Some engines have a large spacer plate between the oil pan and the base of the engine block/crankcase. If this plate is present, remove the two fixing screws from diagonally opposite corners of the plate. Remove the plate from the motor base, noting how it is installed.
Installation
9. Remove all traces of sealant/gasket material from the mating surfaces of the cylinder block/crankcase and oil pan, and then wipe the oil pan and the inside of the engine with a clean rag.
10. If a spacer plate is present, remove all traces of sealant/gasket material from the spacer plate, then apply a thin coat of suitable sealant to the top mating surface of the plate. Position the plate against the base of the cylinder block/crankcase and tighten the appropriate screws securely.
11. On engines without a gasket, make sure the oil pan mating surfaces are clean and dry, and then apply a thin coat of an appropriate sealant to the oil pan mating surface.
12. On engines where the oil pan is fitted with a gasket, make sure that all traces of «old» the gaskets were removed and all oil pan mating surfaces were clean and dry. Install a new gasket to the top of the oil pan, using dabs of grease to hold it in place.
13. Move the oil pan to the cylinder block/crankcase. Screw in the appropriate bolts, making sure that each is screwed in according to its original position. Tighten the bolts evenly and progressively to the specified torque.
14. If necessary, align the air conditioning compressor with its supports on the oil pan and screw in the appropriate bolts. Tighten the compressor mounting bolts securely, and then install the drive belt as described in chapter 1B.
15. Dock the electrical connector of the oil level sensor (in the presence of).
16. Lower the vehicle and then fill the engine with oil as described in chapter 1B.
