2. Remove pistons and connecting rods as described in paragraph 9. If no work is to be done on the pistons and connecting rods, there is no need to remove the cylinder head or remove the pistons from the cylinders. You just need to move the pistons far enough up to move the connecting rods away from the crankshaft journals.
3. Check the crankshaft end play as described in paragraph 13, and then work as described below.
Engines 1.4 l
4. Working from the outside of the cylinder block, remove any small (M6) bolts securing the main bearing housing to the base of the cylinder block. Mark for yourself the installation depth of the left and right crankshaft seals in the cylinder block / main bearing housing.
5. Working in a criss-cross sequence, release 10 large (M11) bolts of the main bearing housing, performing a turn per approach. Once all the bolts have been released, finally remove them from the housing.
6. After unscrewing all the bolts, carefully remove the main bearing housing by gently prying it away from the base of the cylinder block. Remove the lower main bearing shells and use adhesive tape to secure them to their respective locations on the housing. If the two dowel pins are loose, remove them and store them in a safe place along with the chassis.
7. Remove the crankshaft and discard both cuffs. Remove the oil pump drive chain from the end of the crankshaft. If necessary, remove the drive sprocket and remove the segment key.
8. Remove the upper main bearing shells and store them together with the corresponding lower bearing shells. Also remove the two thrust washers from the cylinder block (mounted on both sides of the No. 2 main bearing).
Engines 1.6 l
9. Turn out bolts and remove cases of the left and right cuffs of a cranked shaft from each end of the block of cylinders, having noted for itself position of installation of adjusting pins. If the dowel pins are loose, remove them and store them in a safe place along with the housings.
10. Remove the oil pump drive chain and remove the drive sprocket from the end of the crankshaft. Remove the segment key and store in a safe place along with the sprocket.
11. The main bearing caps must be numbered 1 through 5, starting from the end of the engine where the gearbox is docked to it. If there is no marking, mark the caps appropriately with a center punch or paint.
12. Turn out bolts of fastening of covers of radical bearings and remove covers. Remove the lower main bearing shells and tape them to their respective caps and store in a safe place.
13. Carefully remove the crankshaft, being careful not to dislodge the upper main bearing shells.
14. Remove the upper bearing shells from the cylinder block and use adhesive tape to attach them to the appropriate covers and put them in a safe place. Remove the thrust washers from the No. 2 main bearing and store them in a safe place along with the appropriate bearing cap.
