It is extremely important to choose a suitable place to perform such work. An appropriately sized work area and space for the vehicle is required. If you don't have access to a workshop or garage, you will need at least a level, level, clean work area.
Cleaning the engine compartment and engine/gearbox before removing the latter will make it easier to identify the parts and help keep the tools clean and tidy.
You will also need a lifting device for the engine. Make sure that the lifting capacity of this device exceeds the combined weight of the engine and transmission. When removing the engine/transmission from the vehicle, be aware of the potential hazards involved. Safety first!
It is very helpful to have an assistant. There are so many examples where one person cannot safely perform the steps required to remove an engine from a vehicle. Safety is paramount, especially given the potential dangers of these types of procedures. A second person should always be ready to help in an emergency.
Plan all work in advance. Before starting, get (buy or borrow) tools and equipment that you need but don't have. To the list of equipment necessary for the safe and relatively easy removal and installation of the engine / gearbox (in addition to the lifting device), includes the following items: heavy-duty rolling jack, several blocks of wood, complete sets of wrenches and sockets (as described at the end of this manual), a sufficient amount of rags, and cleaning solvent to clean up spilled oil, coolant, and fuel. If a lifting device is to be rented, take care of it in advance and complete any steps that do not require it before renting it. This will save money and time.
Expect that you will not be able to use the car for a long time, especially in the case of major repairs. Some overhaul procedures may require contacting a dealer or specialist shop/workshop. These businesses often have busy schedules, so we recommend that you consult with them prior to engine removal and disassembly. This will allow you to accurately estimate the time required to complete the repair.
When removing the engine from the car, be careful to disconnect the external elements. Mark wires, cables and hoses in a suitable way before removing them. This will make the installation process much easier. An effective way to ensure correct installation is to take a series of photographs of various items before detaching or removing them. These photos will be an invaluable aid when installing the engine/gearbox.
Use extreme caution when removing the engine/gearbox from the engine compartment and reinstalling the unit. Carelessness can result in serious injury. Make a plan of action and allocate the necessary time, and this work, although it is a lot, will be completed successfully.
