Removing
1. Disconnect the wire «masses» from battery (see «Disconnecting the battery»).
2. On 1.9L DW series diesel engines, loosen the clamp in the center of the engine cover and remove the fastening screw on the right side. Remove the engine cover. On 2.0L diesel engines, turn the four plastic tabs 90°and remove the engine cover (pic. 8.3, a-d).
3. To gain access to the electric motor from above and below, apply the parking brake, raise the front of the vehicle and securely support it under (see «Lifting and placing the car on supports»). Loosen the screws and remove the motor protection (if applicable).
4. Remove the air filter assembly and air intake lines as described in chapter 4A.
5. Turn away two nuts and disconnect electroconducting from the electromagnetic valve of a starter. Remove the washers from under the nuts.
6. Turn out three bolts (two on the back of the motor and one accessible through the top of the gearbox housing), supporting the electric motor while unscrewing the bolts (pic. 11.6). Remove the washers from under the bolt heads and mark the location of the electrical wiring or hose brackets secured with bolts.

7. Remove the starter from under the engine and remove the dowel pin (-s) with electric motor/gearbox (if applicable) (pic. 11.7).

Installation
8. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal. Properly position the dowel pin (-s). Position wiring harness or hose brackets under bolt heads as noted prior to removal.
