Note. Numerous variations of systems for reducing harmful emissions are installed on cars during the manufacturing process. The following information refers to the most common systems.
Engine ventilation system
Examination
1. The elements of this system do not require any other attention than regular checking of the cleanliness and performance of the hoses.
Emission control system
Examination
2. The effectiveness of a catalytic converter can only be verified by measuring the composition of the exhaust gases with a quality, accurately calibrated gas analyzer. If this equipment is present, it must be connected and installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
3. If the toxicity of exhaust gases is increased, before recognizing the catalytic converter as faulty, it is recommended to make sure that the problem is not due to a malfunction of the injector (-ov) or other malfunction of the diesel fuel supply system. See your Peugeot/Citroen dealer for more information.
Replacing the catalytic converter
4. Refer to chapter 4B or 4B.
EGR system (models with 1.9L DJY engine)
Examination
5. If the EGR system does not seem to be working properly, the vehicle should be taken to a Peugeot/Citroen dealer for inspection.
EGR valve replacement
6. Disconnect the wire «masses» from battery (see «Disconnecting the battery»).
7. Remove the air intake duct and air distribution housing as described in chapter 4B.
8. Remove the cylinder head cover as described in chapter 2B.
9. Remove the clamp securing the bottom of the EGR pipe to the EGR valve. If the factory crimp-type tie is still installed, cut it. Worm-drive clamps are available from Peugeot/Citroen dealers in the Parts Department (screw) clamp. If a worm gear clamp is installed (screw) clamp, unscrew the screw and remove the clamp from the pipeline.
10. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the top of the EGR valve.
11. Turn out two bolts of fastening of the EGR valve to an exhaust manifold. Remove valve and gasket.
12. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following points:
- A) Clean the mating surfaces of the EGR valve and exhaust manifold and install a new gasket.
- b) Secure the EGR pipe with new worm gear clamps (screw) clamp if crimp type clamps were originally installed.
- V) Install the cylinder head cover as described in chapter 2B.
- G) Install the air intake duct and air distribution housing as described in chapter 4B.
EGR Solenoid Replacement
13. To remove the EGR solenoid valve, disconnect the two vacuum hoses and disconnect the electrical connector. Loosen the nuts and remove the valve from the support bracket.
14. Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.
EGR system (models with 1.9 l WJZ engine)
Examination
15. If the EGR system does not seem to be working properly, the vehicle should be checked by a Peugeot/Citroen dealer who has special diagnostic equipment.
EGR valve replacement
16. Remove the upper section of the intake manifold as described in chapter 4B. The EGR valve can then be removed from the manifold.
17. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
Accelerator Lever Switch Replacement
18. The switch is mounted on top of the high pressure fuel pump. If the switch is faulty, the replacement should be done by a Peugeot/Citroen dealer who has special diagnostic equipment (see chapter 4B).
EGR system (models with 1.9L WJY engine)
Examination
19. If the EGR system does not seem to be working properly, the vehicle should be taken to a Peugeot/Citroen dealer who has special diagnostic equipment for inspection (see chapter 4B).
EGR valve replacement
20. Remove the upper section of the intake manifold as described in chapter 4B. The EGR valve can then be removed from the manifold.
21. Installation is carried out in sequence. reverse withdrawal.
Solenoid valve replacement
22. The EGR solenoid valve is located on the battery base plate (pic. 3.22).

23. To remove the EGR solenoid valve, disconnect the two vacuum hoses and disconnect the electrical connector. Turn out bolts of fastening of a basic arm and take the valve from engine compartment.
24. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
EGR system (models with 2.0 l engine)
Examination
25. Have a Peugeot/Citroen dealer check.
EGR valve replacement
26. Disconnect the wire «masses» from battery (see «Disconnecting the battery»).
27. Turn out bolts of fastening of basic clips of the EGR pipeline to an inlet manifold (pic. 3.27).
Pic. 3.27. Remove the bolts securing the EGR pipe clamps to the intake manifold...
28. Disconnect the vacuum hose and then unscrew the two nuts securing the EGR valve to the exhaust manifold (pic. 3.28).

29. Turn out two bolts of fastening of the pipeline EGR to an elbow branch pipe of an inlet collector. Remove the EGR valve and pipe assembly from the manifold and remove the gasket from the flange connection between the EGR pipe and the intake manifold (pic. 3.29, a, b).
Pic. 3.29 a. Remove two screws (marked with arrows) fastening the EGR pipe to the intake manifold elbow...
Pic. 3.29b.... then remove the valve assembly with pipeline and remove the gasket from the EGR pipe flange (models with 2.0 l engine)
30. To separate the EGR pipeline from the valve, remove the clamp securing the upper flexible part of the pipeline to the valve.
31. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following points:
- A) Clean the mating surfaces of the EGR valve and exhaust manifold.
- b) Secure the EGR pipe with new worm gear clamps (screw) clamp if crimp type clamps were originally installed.
Solenoid valve replacement
32. The EGR solenoid valve is located on the battery base plate (pic. 3.32). For easier access, remove the air filter assembly as described in chapter 4B.
